DIAGNOSING TMJ DISORDER IN RICHLAND

Accurate diagnosis of TMJ can be difficult because the symptoms are also characteristic of a number of other conditions such as a toothache, sinus or ear infections, facial neuralgias, myofascial pain and various types of headaches.

Dr. Bloxham will perform specific tests to rule out or confirm the presence of any underlying conditions including:

• A detailed health history looking for any injuries, traumas, procedures, stress related factors, or conditions that may contribute to the symptoms.
• Physical examination of the joint, bones and muscles of the jaw, mouth, face, neck and head
• Pain and tenderness assessment
• Limited motion or locking of the jaw when opening, closing, or moving the jaw side-to-side
• Joint noise that may be present during movements of the jaw

Dr. Bloxham may also require one or more of the following tests to aid in the diagnostic process:

• X-rays of the face, joint and teeth to help identify the cause of TMJ pain symptoms
• Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assess soft tissues including muscles and the disc of the jaw joint
• Computed tomography (CT) scan for a highly detailed view of bones in and around the jaw

Dr. Bloxham works closely with other healthcare professionals such as, ear nose and throat specialists, neurologists, primary care physicians, pain specialists, rheumatologists and endocrinologists when indicated to achieve maximum relief for his patients.
